Read full description of the books Olifanten in mijn boomgaard:This is a hard book to rate because it's a true story and is written by a woman which is not a writer. The author mainly is a person who want to rescue Africa's nature and she writes book to teach people not to forget the beauties of our world. I already read books of this kind and I usually enjoy them, because I have never been to Africa but I think I will one day, because I have the feeling that in that Country we can be closer to our inner soul and to the start of it all. The food is the theme that links all the personal stories written in this book. The author is Italian - as I am - and the book start when the writer was a child, and she was born in 1943 so we live WW" through a child's eyes and later memories. It was interesting to read about life in my Country at those times and also read about the female relatives of the writer: her grandmother and her aunties especially. As me, the author believes in life after death so it was great to read fascinating passages about her grandmother's and aunt's deaths. Then we move to Africa: I found some sentences very touching and the whole book is written with heart but I admit I skipped many pages because the descriptions of all the animals and plants were too long and not very good so they became boring. And there are so many things about food, of course, and even if I am Italian and love to eat I do not care reading about it. The author shares with the reader her pain for her husband's and son's deaths but she always remembers to us all that from death can born a new life. This is the message of this book: the author sees life in a great way, for me, because is similar to mine, and she sees the wonder of life in an amazing Country where people are not stupid as most of those here, that think about silly things and do not care for the world. Of course there are good and bad people everywhere but being there, even for a while, must be something amazing and touching for the soul. I suggest this book to those who have been to Africa and especially to those like me who have never been... yet.
Read information about the authorKuki Gallmann is an Italian-born (born Maria Boccazzi) Kenyan national, best-selling author, poet, environmental activist, and conservationist.
Fascinated by Africa, Gallmann moved to Kenya in 1972 with her husband Paolo and son Emanuele, and acquired Ol ari Nyiro, a 98,000 acre estate in Western Laikipia, in Kenya's Great Rift Valley. At the time the estate was still a cattle ranch, which she would later transform into a conservation park. Both her husband and son eventually died in tragic accidents within a few years.
Kuki decided to stay on in Kenya and to make a difference. She chose to work toward ecological conservation in the early '80s, becoming a Kenyan citizen. As a living memorial to Paolo and Emanuele, she established The Gallmann Memorial Foundation (GMF), which promotes coexistence of people and Nature in Africa and is active in education, biodiversity research, habitat protection, reforestation, community service, peace and reconciliation, poverty alleviation and public health. GMF promotes environmental education of Kenyan students. She dedicated Ol ari Nyiro to this ideal, converting it into the Laikipia Nature Conservancy.
Gallmann published five books, all global best-sellers. The first, her autobiography I Dreamed Of Africa, became a feature film.
